I note that the first two anthologists cited by ISFDB to snap it up for "genre" anthologies had it right: Ghosts and Marvels: A Selection of Uncanny Tales from Daniel Defoe to Algernon Blackwood edited by V. H Collins, and Dorothy Sayers's (natch) Great Short Stories of Detection, Mystery and Horror...it took till such sloppier labelers as Bennett Cerf to lump it in entirely with ghosts. I first read it in Kathleen Lines's THE HOUSE OF THE NIGHTMARE AND OTHER STORIES, one of the key volumes of my youthful reading, when I was 8yo.

It is a lovely story, and it's notable that Jacobs was mostly known as a humorist during most of his career. I don't remember any mooting of any other sort of chauvinism being endorsed by the Secret Rulers of the future in "Marching"...but it has been a number of years since I've read it...likewise, I don't see the protagonist's fate as Revenge so much as disposal/dismissal once his usefulness is at an end. I don't think Kornbluth at any point endorses anything about those who use the hapless survivor to execute, in every sense, their desired result...and that is much of his point. But I seem to be relatively lonely in seeing it this way...but it is clear to me that Kornbluth is mocking those who see themselves as natural and deserving elites in a way that any survivor (which Kornbluth barely was) of WW2, particularly when Jewish, might be inclined to do. I'm glad you do gather they had their own Final Solution in mind...but were glad to have someone work out the final details for them, so that they could choose not to deal with their complicity.Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10319611413831679096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163165929158089008.post-49710063113679424182023-11-22T10:48:42.491-05:002023-11-22T10:48:42.491-05:00The Luminist Archives will allow you to check the ...The Luminist Archives will allow you to check the (relatively few) subsequent issues of this SPACE SF (as opposed to Lyle Kenyon Engel's much worse later and even shorter-lived one) for any reader response: https://www.luminist.org/archives/SF/Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10319611413831679096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163165929158089008.post-63278636395287899372023-11-22T10:36:38.046-05:002023-11-22T10:36:38.046-05:00At that point in his career, I imagine Dick was pr...At that point in his career, I imagine Dick was probably mildly annoyed by something such as thoughtless "spoiler" illustrations, but too busy moving on to new work to spend too much time worrying about it. Yeah, I've probably missed many points, but these stories offer such a rich tapestry.

I don't think I claim that science fiction is about predicting the future. In fact, Bradbury was interested in the human psyche and how people react and respond to extreme situations, using different genres to explore different ideas. He does this best, I think. in his horror fiction (The October Country is my favourite of his collections).

I do enjoy, however, poking at early SF for its silliness (in modern eyes), but I do this for fun & no disrespect is intended. Most SF isn't about predicting the future (only a very small sub-set of writers do that), but a play of ideas playfully deployed, or a channel for personal concerns, here Bradbury's requiem for lives forlorn with regret. So what if all his astronauts are men? or that the space travel is not correct to what historical happened later? Does that negate a brilliant Sturgeon, Dick or Sheckley story? It would make all space travel utterly tiresome if they had NASA technology. The film 'Forbidden Planet' and 'Star Trek' have a beauty in their imaginative aesthetics, as much as Kubrick's in '2001'. And that ency of the one man who had experience with women, replicates what soldiers in the great wars also conveyed, who were also facing the certainty of death.
bobbyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07776447691709988024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163165929158089008.post-77524095331790469222023-11-09T01:19:23.128-05:002023-11-09T01:19:23.128-05:00Martin generally better in shorter forms, I'd ...Martin generally better in shorter forms, I'd say...the first work of his that struck me as excessively self-indulgent was THE ARMAGEDDON RAG.

I rather enjoyed THE OUTER LIMITS revival pilot, as well.Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10319611413831679096noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8163165929158089008.post-56537884615423448702023-10-18T15:34:02.861-04:002023-10-18T15:34:02.861-04:00While I read this one first in R is for Rocket or ...While I read this one first in R is for Rocket or S is for Space, as a kid.
